Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of July 7, 2013

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

A July 12 Live Sciencestory featured a new magnet planned for the Large Hadron Collider. The story quoted the Lab’s GianLuca Sabbi, who helped design the magnet. Symmetrymagazine ran a similar story.

A July 11 San Jose Mercury News story on geothermal seismic activity quoted the Lab’s Ernest Majer.

A July 11 RedOrbitstory featured work led by the Lab’s Robert Ritchie showing how a lack of vitamin D might lead to the aging of bones. ANI News, Examiner.com, Zee News andtheCambodian Times covered the work.

A July 10 Daily Calstory noted that the Lab received a record eight R&D 100 awards this year and quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon and Chin Guok, and highlighted winners GaoLiu and Delia Milliron. R&D magazine and HPC Wire were some of the others that covered the news.

A July 10 Oakland Tribune story on efficiencies brought by moving some computing to the cloud quoted the Lab’s Lavanya Ramakrishnan and Jon Bashor.

A July 10 Naturestory on the limits of electron microscopy quoted the Lab’s UliDahmen. GizModo.com ran a similar story.

A July 10 Public Radio International story on rare earth elements in Alaska quoted the Lab’s David Shuh.

A July 9 San Francisco Business Times story featured Lab startup TeselaGen.

A July 9 story in Brazil’s Science Today looked at the IceCube project and quoted the Lab’s Spencer Klein.

A July 7 WWJ-AM Detroit radio story featured the Lab’s thirdhand smoke research and interviewed Lara Gundel.

A July 7 story in London’s The Guardian profiled the Lab’s Saul Perlmutter.
