Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of June 2, 2013

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

A June 6 Sacramento Bee story highlighted work led by the Lab’s Mark Mendell showing high rates of poor ventilation in California schools. The study was widely publicized including by the Fresno Bee, San Luis Obispo Tribune, Bakersfield Californian, KMJ radio inFresno, KGO-AM, RedOrbit, Examiner.com, California HealthLine and others.

A June 6 Wiredmagazine story featured the Lab’s Janet Jansson and the Earth Microbiome Project.

A June 5 Wall Street Journal story on the rise of China’s supercomputers quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon. China Digital Times ran a similar story.

A June 5 GreenTechMediastory noted the recent upgrade of the Lab-led EnergyIQ website and quoted Evan Mills.

A June 5 HPC Wirestory covered efforts at NERSC to conduct a plasma physics simulation involving more than a trillion particles and quoted the Lab’s Prabhat and Surendra Byna.

A June 4 San Jose Mercury News story on changes in the wind industry quoted the Lab’s Mark Bolinger.

A June 4 U.S. News & World Report story highlighted work led by the Lab’s PauloMonteiro showing the long-lasting properties of Roman-made concrete. UPI news, San Francisco Business Journal, and ANI News were just some of the many other news outlets covering the work.

A June 3 story in The Atlantic featured a breakthrough imaging technique led by the Lab’s Felix Fischer allowing the observation of atoms forming bonds. The research was widely covered this week by Scientific American, The Independent, New York Times, The Scientist, MSN.com, Mumbai Mirror, and Smithsonian among others.

A June 3 PhysOrg story featured new insights into breast cancer as led by the Lab’s Mina Bissell and Cyrus Ghajar.

A June 3 CNBCcommentary on fracking was written by the Lab’s Richard Muller.

A May 31 NBC Newsstory on recent Oklahoma tornados, and the impression that they’re getting worse, quoted the Lab’s Michael Wehner.
