Lab news releases earned the following coverage:


ABC7 News produced a 3-minute video with Alexandre Bayen (ETA), discussing his research on using machine learning to predict what self-driving cars can do to improve traffic. Science also covered the work.

Science Magazine, HPC Wire, and Daily Cal picked up a Lab release on staff selected as AAAS Fellows, including Allen Goldstein (ETA), Sung-Hou Kim (BIO), Katherine Yelick (CS), and Susannah Tringe (JGI).

Physics reported on research by Jacklyn Gates (CSD) and her colleagues to produce the first direct mass measurement of superheavy elements. UC Berkeley Physics also picked up the release.

The Weather Network, Las Vegas Sun, and Medium mentioned Christina Patricola (EESA) and Michael Wehner (CRD) for their study published in Nature on climate simulations projecting wetter, windier hurricanes. Star Tribune, Claims Journal also ran the AP piece and the Bloomberg piece, and The University Network, Science and Technology Research News, and My Sinchew (Malaysia) covered the Lab release.

The Wall Street Journal cited a Lab study in a piece on the world’s fastest-growing market for air conditioners and power-saving strategies that could help developing nations. (subscription required)

Mother Jones reported on a recent Lab project led by Evan Mills (ETA) produced with the California Energy Commission to measure the significant energy consumption of video games. The article also quoted Jimmy Mai (IT), whose job as a tester was to play video games.

Axios quoted Michael Wehner (CRD) on the National Climate Assessment, which was released last Friday. AGU listed Wehner as an expert available for comment.

Nature quoted Haimei Zheng (MSD) in a piece on the microscope revolution that’s sweeping through materials science.

Nature mentioned the Lab’s discovery of technetium in 1937 in a piece on the periodic table and “promethium puzzles.”

Salon.com mentioned Berkeley Earth, Lab monitoring of global air quality, in a piece on the inequalities in exposure to hazardous air.

Fast Company reported on a new smog-reducing roof shingle that was tested at the Lab.

Breitbart quoted Frederik Schulz and Tanja Woyke (JGI) on “giant virus” research recently published in Nature Communications.

Larry Dale (ETA) was interviewed on KCBS radio on wildfire risk growing at different rates around the state.

Business Insider covered a team of high school seniors, including a former Lab intern, working on a device to help prevent wildfires.

The Lab was mentioned in the Daily Cal and Medium as a member of a Fire Research Group launched with UC to explore effective engineering solutions for uncontrolled wildfires.

Physics Magazine at UC Berkeley featured Dan Kasen (NSD) and his work on neutron star mergers and supermassive black holes.

In a piece on the world’s fastest supercomputers,The Dallas Morning Newsmentioned Perlmutter, the Lab’s new supercomputer in development for 2020 specifically designed for the needs of scientific research. HPC Wire also mentioned the Lab’s development of Perlmutter / NERSC-9.

West Point’s Pointer View reported on Lab testing and demo of scene data fusion for a radiation detection exercise.

Physics ran a piece by André Walker-Loud (NSD) and Science News and Inquisitr quoted him on a study published in Physical Review Letters indicating a “new era” where physicists have determined what makes up the bulk of the proton’s mass.

Quanta Magazine quoted Joseph Orenstein (MSD) on a recent study published in Nature Physics on universal quantum phenomenon found in strange metals.

Greentech Media and EQ International mentioned the Lab’s role in creating tintable glass technology using electrochromic technology.

Biomass Magazine and FuelCellWorks ran an announcement on $98 million in DOE awards for transformative energy projects, including a Lab award of more than $3 million for research on Metal-Supported SOFCS for Ethanol-Fueled Vehicles.

MyScience
picked up a UC release quoting Eva Nogales (BIO) on a paper published in Science pushing the limits of cryo-electron microscopy with freeze-frame microscopy research.
