Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of May 24, 2015

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The May 30 edition of The Economist includes a story on better batteries and quotes Vince Battaglia.

A May 29 Salonstory on talking about climate change cited a comment by Michael Wehner.

A May 29 Scientific American story on the opening of a new Genentech facility noted that much of the research into its energy efficiency was done at Berkeley Lab’s FLEXLAB.

A May 28 Wiredstory on the impact of video streaming on energy efficiency quoted Arman Shehabi and cited his recent research. The interview was facilitated by Public Affairs.

A May 28 R&D.comfeature looked at work led by David Romps and Rusen Oktem showing a new way to understand cloud behavior. UC Research and Supercomputing Onlinealso covered their work, which stemmed from a news story originally written by Lab Public Affairs.

A May 28 Reddit “Ask Me Anything” discussion on the Large Hadron Collider included the Lab’s Beate Heinemann.

A May 28 Washington Post story on how PV can improve the value of homes cited a research report led by Ben Hoen.

The opening of the Lab’s Solar Energy Research Center, now Chu Hall, was widely covered at a press event May 26. Attending the event were the San Jose Mercury News, KGO-TV ABC, KTVU-TV Fox, KCBS-AM, KGO-AM, Daily Cal, KTSF-TV, Sing Tao Daily, and World Journal. Other coverage appeared on KQED-FM, KPIX-TV CBS, KNTV-TV NBC, Patch and many others. The press event was orchestrated by the Lab’s Public Affairs office.

A May 27 Fermilab Today story on the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument noted the lab’s leadership in the project and quoted Michael Levi.

A May 26 CIO.comstory on the restart of the Large Hadron Collider noted the role of ESnet. ESnet also appeared in a May 27 GCN.comstory on its role in helping with big data.

A recent AtlasObscura story on efforts to build better supercomputers quoted HorstSimon.
