Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

Strategic Communications helped launch international Dark Matter Day, held on Oct. 31. Heather Gray, Dan McKinsey, and Karol Krizka (substituting for Zach Marshall) appeared at an event Oct. 29 at Chabot Space & Science Center, Lucie Tvrznikova spoke at an Oct. 11 Nerd Nite SF event, and Peter Sorensen spoke at the California Academy of Sciences on Oct. 31. Newsweek magazine also covered the launch of this inaugural event: http://www.newsweek.com/dark-matter-day-universe-biggest-mystery-696502

On Oct. 30, the Lab coordinated a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session with Dan McKinsey on dark matter. 

And a New Yorker magazine story also looked at the hunt for dark matter, including the planetarium show, “Phantom of the Universe: The Hunt for Dark Matter,” produced in part by the Lab’s Michael Barnett.

A screening of the “Phantom of the Universe” in Mexico took place last week and involved Barnett and the Lab’s George Smoot. Mexican news outlets Reforma and El Universal also covered it. 

A Nov. 2 Nature story on the possible finding of a large chamber in Egypt’s Great Pyramid noted previous research by Luis Alvarez. His efforts were also noted in stories in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, San Jose Mercury News, Australian Broadcasting, PBS News, and Gizmodo, among others.

A Nov. 2 Quanta magazine story looked at new insights into proteins and included work by Ron Zuckermann.

A Nov. 2 Nature book review looked at the history of the IceCube project and included the Lab’s involvement.

A Nov. 1 Wired magazine story on an effort to catalogue every microbe on earth quoted Nikos Kyrpides.

A Nov. 1 PV Magazine story, based on a Lab news release, looked at work by Gerbrand Ceder that may lead to increased capacity in lithium ion batteries.

A Nov. 1 Financial Times story on the potential of quantum computing quoted Marcos Lopez de Prado.

An Oct. 31 California magazine Q&A with Richard Muller touched on his work in energy and climate change.

An Oct. 30 New Scientist story on carbon emissions quoted Charlie Koven, citing some of his recent research.
