Berkeley Lab In the News, August 21 to Sept. 2, 2016

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

A Sept. 1 Utility Dive story featured a new report on wind power led by Ryan Wiser and Mark Bolinger. GreenTechMedia also ran a similar story along with a podcast with Wiser.

And on Aug. 27, a New York Times editorial on wind power also noted the recent report by Wiser and Bolinger.

An Aug. 31 US News & World Report story highlighted new insights into cancer, work led by Gary Karpen and Weiguo Zhang. Daily Cal, Medscape News, HealthDay News, FierceBiotech, and others also covered their findings based on a Lab news release.

An Aug. 31 Las Vegas Review-Journal story noted the Lab’s involvement as finalists for a geothermal energy lab.

Technology Reviewmagazine recently unveiled its list of top Innovators Under 35 and included the Lab’s Kendra Kuhl on the list.

And the September issue of Diablo Magazine includes a list of its Forty Under Forty, which includes the Lab’s Kathryn Zurek.

An Aug. 30 insideHPC story looked at new funds for clean energy high performance computing projects, some of which will be co-led by the Lab.

An Aug. 29 San Jose Mercury-News front-page story on California’s efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions quoted Jeff Greenblatt. He was also quoted in a related Vox.com story.

An Aug. 28 San Francisco Chronicle story highlighted two new studies on the dropping price of solar prices, work led by Galen Barbose and Mark Bolinger and first seen in a Lab news release. Their findings were also covered by the San Francisco Business Times, Scientific American, GreenWire, Energy Matters, PV Magazine, Clean Technica, and the Ag & Energy video report.

An Aug. 26 San Francisco Chronicle story noted the suspension of efforts to create a second campus in Richmond. The Mercury-News, Daily Cal, San Francisco BusinessTimes, Berkeleyside.com and the Richmond Standard all covered the news.

An Aug. 22 Scientific American story on the Maker movement noted related efforts by the Lab’s Ron Zuckermann.

An Aug. 22 Daily Cal story, based on a Lab news release, noted the awarding of small business vouchers to companies to work with the Lab and quoted Jodi Bellacicco.

An Aug. 20 Xinhua story featured new research into the uses of Metal-Organic Frameworks by Omar Yaghi. Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News also covered his work, based on a Lab news release.

A recent story on ABC Salud, Spain, looked at the dangers of e-cigs, work led by HugoDestaillats and Lara Gundel.Their work first appeared in a Lab news release.
