Berkeley Lab In the News, Dec. 20, 2012-Jan. 4, 2013

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The latest issue of Home Energy Magazine includes a story written by the Lab’s David Bailey, who retrofitted his home with energy efficient lighting.

A Jan. 3 Sciencemagazine story profiled the Lab’s Peter Nugent and a team’s discovery of a supernova.

A Jan. 2 Investor’s Business Daily story noted Lab research to create a quick test for radiation.

The New Year always brings lists of “Top Science” stories and many included Berkeley Lab-related projects. Scientific American magazine’s list actually looks ahead to what might be big scientific achievements for 2013, including particle-seeking efforts of the Berkeley Lab-led Sanford Underground Research Laboratory.

Science magazine’s top science stories of 2012 included results from the Daya Bay neutrino project, and included a video explanation featuring Lab photographs.

RedOrbit’s top list included the BOSS project led by the Lab’s David Schlegel (The Dark Universe Comes to Light).

And, io9’s list of biggest scientific breakthroughs included work by the Lab’s Seung-Wuk Lee (A Virus that creates Electricity).

A Dec. 28 Daily Galaxystory featured an “anti-matter supernova,” found with help from Lab researchers.

A Dec. 26 Huffington Post story noted the groundbreaking for the FLEXLAB as well as research by Robert Ritchie testing the strength of ceramics.

A Dec. 26 Technology Review story featured Lab research showing why solar installation costs are more in the U.S. than Germany and quoted the Lab’s Ryan Wiser.

A Dec. 24 Daily Calstory featured breast cancer research by the Lab’s Daniel Fletcher and Mina Bissell.

A Dec. 23 San Francisco Chronicle story on the dangers of electrical fires quoted the Lab’s Joe Eto.

A Dec. 21 UPI news story noted the awarding of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to the Lab’s Art Rosenfeld. The San Francisco Chronicle, Associated Press, and many other outlets also covered the announcement.

A Dec. 21ThomasNetNewsstory featured smart windows research led by the Lab’s Delia Milliron(Smart Windows Choose What Light to Let In). 

A Dec. 20 India Weststory on the battery company, Seeo, noted its Lab partnership.
